If you are living in St John's, and have an interest in anime, you should get involved with the AFS. The AFS would best be described as an "informal cooperative", and its guiding principle is that more people can see more anime for less money when they share resources.

As the club has increased in size we have run into the problem of some of our tapes going missing. In an effort to counteract this problem, and to replace the lost tapes, we have begun a new system of memberships. To come to any of our screenings is still 100% free, in order to borrow tapes from the Fansub Library it is nessisary to become a member. The process to becoming a member is fairly straightforward, first you have to come to an anime showing and sign up. Once you have been to a few showings you then pay a semesterly $3 donation to the Fansub Fund. (Since we are a Ratified Society we base our year on the three major semesters of the University)

This fee enables you to borrow tapes for intervals of two weeks. You may borrow at most two tapes at one meeting. The tapes are distributed and collected back at our (usually) bi-weekly meetings.

The AFS currently has nominal recognition by the CSU, which allows us to hold screenings at MUN. The Society has been a ratified club since the summer of 1995.

Fans Outside the St. John's Area

we are here

The St John's Anime Film Society operates out of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

Unfortunately we cannot currently accept members from outside Newfoundland, or indeed outside the immediate St. John's area. We are not a tape distribution operation; we simply don't have the resources. We lend tapes, it is up to members to copy them if they want their own copies, and obviously we cannot do this over any great distance.

If you contribute to the society through tape trading or other means you may become an honourary member, but all that really gets you is a warm fuzzy feeling.

Fansubs and the Fansub Fund

If you don't know what fansubs are they are tapes of Anime which have not been translated or released in North America officially. Instead groups of insane fans have translated and subtitled the films and episodes themselves. The tapes are distributed basically for free through a network of fans. This is the only way to get copies of the really good and really interesting Anime without learning Japanese and buying the import laserdiscs or video tapes (or going to Japan yourself).

The St John's Anime Film Society collects donations from members into what we call the Fansub Fund . From this fund we buy tapes and supplies, as well as pay for shipping of new fansubs. Every donation you make will make more Anime available for everyone.

We also copy tapes on an informal basis, depending on when equipment and time is available, and how badly you want a copy. Currently, our access to suitable video recording equipment is rather limited and we cannot guarentee to get your tapes done any time soom. The best bet is to borrow the tapes from the club and make your own copies, that way you will know that they will be done this century. :)

The Fansub Library and the Fansub Fund form the basic reason for the AFS's existence. The other reason being to get everyone we possibly can hooked on Anime!
