It's located at the Holiday Inn, as it always is, and I encourage all of you to turn up. Not only is it always great fun, but this year the anime club is doing something special. From 7:00 to 12:00 at night, we will be running an Anime Extravaganza. There will be an AMV dance party, a showing, trivia and two rounds of Anime Jeopardy (and just to reassure you, my Jeopardy answers are much easier than my trivia . . . mostly). There wll be prizes and good times all around. And if that doesn't convince, well, have I mentioned some of the exec will be cosplaying in short skirts? (I assure you, Aaron makes a lovely Sailor Moon). Anyway, hope to see you all there!

~Rowena

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Last showing of the semester!‏

Hello all,

I'm afraid it's that time again: the last showing of the semester. It'll be on Thursday, April 1, at 7:30 in SN-2109. Everyone got that? Now, as most of you know, it's our spring fest. We'll have food, possibly karaoke and of course, trivia! Answer trivia, win a poster (and abandon hope, all ye who get trivia from my showings - I try to make at least three people cry). Then, ask us trivia and get your revenge (and Pocky, if you can stump us). As we're having all of this other fun, it will be a half showing this time around. And we're showing:

Fairy Tail

Lucy is a 17-year-old girl, who wants to be a full-fledged mage. One day when visiting Harujion Town, she meets Natsu, a young man who gets sick easily by any type of transportation. But Natsu isnt just any ordinary kid, he's a member of one of the world's most infamous mage guilds: Fairy Tail.

Hope to see you all there!

~Rowena

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Anime this Friday‏

Hello gang,

Well, it's time for the exec's favourite time of the semester, Member's Choice, when it's not our fault if the showing sucks. Such a sense of relief. Anyway, our Member's Choice is this Friday, March 19, at 7:30 in A-1046. And, as we've managed to pick the two members whose personalities and tastes are most divergent, it should be quite an interesting night. We're showing:

Battle Programmer Shirase

Battle Programmer Shirase, also known as BPS, is a free programmer with super hacking abilities who doesn't work for money. What he does work for is certainly something that only people like him would appreciate. But, his demeanor doesn't suit the jobs he is hired for. With the evil King of America causing trouble via the internet, Shirase is nothing but busy as each new adventure brings even more interesting people into the picture.

Kiki's Delivery Service

When an apprentice witch turns thirteen, she must leave her home in order to hone her craft. Although Kiki's sole talent is broom-flying, she sets out for adventure with her cat Jiji. They settle in a charming seaside town, where Kiki establishes her own delivery service. As Kiki learns to balance independence with responsibility, her kind heart wins her many new friends in this coming-of-age tale.

Hope to see you all there!

~Rowena

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Anime Does the Time Warp‏

Hello all!

Well, I hope everyone had a good break and enjoyed the fest (and if you don't go, shame, shame, shame on you. Anyone who misses the fest is a terrible person). Anyway, we once again have anime this Friday, March 5, in A-1046 at 7:30. And it's a theme night this week. We're proud to introduce Retro Night, when we'll be showing:

Astro Boy

Creating a robotic boy in the image of his recently deceased son Tobio, Professor Tenma thought nothing could go wrong now that his beloved child had been "reborn"... that is, until he comes to realize that this invention could never replace his son. Before long, however, the robot is kidnapped and spirited away to a robot circus in America, where he is soon rescued by Dr. Ochanomizu, and taken into his care. Tobio is given the new name Tetsuwan Atom, and transforms into Japan's crime-fighting hero, although his anti-violent pacifist views and overall childlike naivety tend to clash with his battles often. This is not the first anime series, but it is the first one with a continuing plot. Arguably, the Father of Anime, Tezuka Osamu's, masterpiece.

Sally the Witch

Sally is the princess of the "witch world", Astoria, who longs to visit the mortal realm - presumably to make friends her own age. One day, Sally teleports to the "mid world" (Earth), where she uses her magic to fend off a couple of burglars menacing two young schoolgirls. Immediately befriended by her new acquaintances - tomboyish Yoshiko Hanamura (known affectionately as "Yotchan") and girly Sumire Kasugano - Sally decides to stay on indefinitely, leading to various kinds of mischief in the best Japanese tradition. Sally tries to keep her supernatural abilities secret, assuming the role of a human child. One of the first magical girl animes. That's right, we can thank Sally for all of the naked transformation sequences (thank you, Sally!).

Hope to see you all there as we journey back to the origins of anime. And remember, if you all show up and have a good time, maybe, just maybe, the Anime Society will do the Time Warp again!

~Rowena

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

It's Fest week!‏

Hello all,

Well, midterm break is coming up and we all know what that means: stress and pain. But when the stress and pain is over, come watch some anime! For those of you who don't know, every midterm break we run a full series of anime. This time, the Fest will run from February 9-21 (this Friday to Sunday), starting at 7:30 every night in A-1043. And we're showing:

Genshiken

This is the story of college freshman Kanji Sasahara and his fellow members of the college club he joins, The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture (aka Genshiken), as he goes shopping for doujinshi, attends conventions and slowly but surely makes his way down the road to fandom. Though technically a comedy, Genshiken would be more accurately described as a humorous documentary about otaku culture.

That's right, we'll be an anime society watching an anime about an anime society. Meta, no? Hope to see you all there (and I challenge you to all to try to spot yourselves!).

~Rowena

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Anime Society is Go!‏

Hello all,

We know life hardly seems living since we cancelled last Friday's showing but you can dry your tears because we've rescheduled! We'll be having our showing this Friday instead, February 12, at 7:30 in A-1043 (note that that's 1043, not 1046. It's next door to our normal room). And we're still showing:

Letter Bee

Apparently abandoned by his mother, orphan Lag Seeing is taken as a "letter" by "Letter Bee" Gauche Suede to a town where his aunt raises him. His affection and admiration for Gauche give Lag the ambition to become a Letter Bee himself, carrying mail through the dangerous wasteland between towns on his world. When he becomes a teenager, he makes the trip to the capital to take the examination to become a trainee Letter Bee. En route, he meets the strange, powerful girl-like creature Niche, who becomes his "dingo," a Letter Bee's travelling companion. Lag yearns to find his mother, and discover why she abandoned him, if she did.

Bartender

Genius bartender, Ryu Sasakura makes the most incredible cocktails anyone has ever tasted. Seeking his "Glass of God", individuals from all different walks of life visit his bar. There's a history of the society, links to anime website resources, a language guide and much more. I assure you, that has never happened before (in my memory anyway, although some of the old execs have a few horror stories) and we will do everything in our power to make sure it never happens again.

That being said, we have our next showing this week, on January 22, at 7:30 in A-1046. As has become the new tradition, we are having American Anime Night. And we're showing:

Inspector Gadget

A clumsy, simple-witted detective named Inspector Gadget is a human being with various bionic gadgets built into his body. With the aid of his niece, Penny, and dog, Brain, he fights his arch-nemesis, Dr. Claw, the leader of an evil organization, known as "M.A.D." (Yes, we know it's not strictly anime but it was animated in Japan and you can't argue with that catchy theme song).

And, of course, one more thing:

Jackie Chan Adventures

The series features the fictional adventures of Jackie Chan, who is an archaeologist, martial arts expert and reluctant sercret agent in the series. With help from his niece Jade, his grumpy old uncle (simply known as "Uncle") and his old friend Captain Black, he saves the world from evil forces that attempt to use magical artifacts to rule the world.

Hope to see you all there!

~Rowena

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Anime Society This Friday!‏

Hello!

Well, once again the semester has started and it's anime time! We have anime this Friday (January 15) at 7:30 in A-1046 (although that room number may be subject to change. Sorry for the late notice but, you know, the exec was totally busy saving the world from aliens while simultaneously ending world hunger and teaching Nicholas Cage how to act (we failed at one of these things; we'll let you guess which). This first showing will be a shortened showing and meet & greet to welcome new members. And we're showing:

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. With the power of "alchemy", they use taboo knowledge to resurrect her. The process fails, and as a toll for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric loses his left leg while the younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm and is able to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. With the help of a family friend, Edward receives metal limbs - "automail" - to replace his lost ones. With that, Edward vows to search for the Philosopher's Stone to return the brothers to their original bodies, even if it means becoming a "State Alchemist", one who uses his/her alchemy for the military.

Also, to all of last semester's trivia winners: we will hopefully have your posters this Friday. Hope to see you all then!

~Rowena

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Important Notice!

Hey everyone!

Sorry to do this to all of you, but we're delaying the tape library sale until next week. We have quite a lengthy list of announcements this time around so please bear with me.

Secondly, we are once again looking for a new exec member! If you think you've got what it takes (it's grueling, I assure you) drop us a line at this address telling us why you'd like to be on the exec and what you think you can bring to it. The application period ends promptly at 5:00pm on October 9th and we hope to announce the new exec that evening so get your applications in pronto!

And, finally, we are once again starting showings this semester. Our first showing is on September 18 at 7:30pm in A-1046 (room may be subject to change but we'll let you know). As some of you know, our first showing of the semester is a Meet & Greet type affair so we'll only be showing one anime. And we're showing classic director Hayao Miyazaki's latest film:

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea

A young boy, Sōsuke, befriends a strange looking goldfish whom he names Ponyo. Unbeknownst to Sōsuke, Ponyo is a magic fish who has decided that she wants to live with Sōsuke and the other humans. Unfortunately, Ponyo's decision to give up her underwater life creates a crack in an ancient magic spell, and places the world in danger. Together, Sōsuke and Ponyo must set things right.

Also, I am excited to announce that during the showing, the Anime Society will be selling off its tape collection! As most of you know, we have an extensive tape library of anime but lately it's become more trouble than it's worth so we are selling it off (and, if one exec member has her way, using the money to finance a dance party). Although I can't guarantee the quality of every tape, each one will only cost $1 and we have everything from Weiss Kreuz to Record of Lodoss War to Card Captor Sakura. So, come one, come all!

I believe that's all the announcements for now. If you have any questions, feel free to email the society. And, as always, we hope to see you all there on Friday!

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Last Showing of the Semester!

Hey everyone, it's that time again! Exams are next week (oh no!) and the summer is starting to clue up. That means that THIS FRIDAY, August 7th, at 7:30, we're having our last showing!

WE'LL BE IN ED-1014, IN THE BASEMENT OF THE EDUCATION BUILDING. AND THE T-SHIRTS ARE FINALLY HERE!!!!! For more details, please see the end of the e-mail.

We're showing (with a 14+ rating):

Valkryia Chronicles

When Imperial forces attack the small border town of Bruhl, Welkin Gunther, son of late General Belgen Gunther, is forced to fight for his life alongside Town Watch captain Alicia Melchiott. Along with Welkin's adopted sister Isara, the three escape to Gallia's capitol and subsequently join the country's militia forces. As members of the newly-formed Squad 7, they must work to repel the invading Imperial forces and discover the true purpose of the invasion itself.

and Tears to Tiara

Set in a fictitious land during a medieval-like era of magic and fantasy, Tears to Tiara unfolds with the Divine Empire’s rise to power as it conquers and rules lands far and wide. On the island of Erin, still ruled by the Ancient Kingdom, the Goidelic people are attempting to sacrifice priestess Riannon to revive protagonist and demon king Arawn to lead the resistance against the Empire. Although the ritual fails and Riannon survives, the seal imprisoning the demon king is broken and Arawn is resurrected. Armed with mysterious and devastating powers and a human’s demeanour, Arawn joins Riannon, her brother and battalion commander, Arthur, as well as their team of fighters, in the epic struggle against the Divine Empire.

Regarding T-Shirts: If you pre-paid for your shirts, we have your order form, and you can just pick up your shirt. If we don't remember who you are, a piece of ID would be good. ^_^ If you did not order a shirt, we have a limited number available for purchase, in various sizes. These shirts are being sold for $15 each, on a first-come-first-served basis (contact via e-mail is recommended if you can't be there on Friday). If you can't make it to Friday's show, don't worry, we'll have them with us in September!

Hopefully we'll see you on Friday!
All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Sci-Fi on the Rock 3

Hello everyone!

The Anime Society will have a table this weekend at Sci-Fi On the Rock 3, which is being held at the Holiday Inn. The fest this semester will be taking place from Feb 20-22 in our normal room (A-1046) at our normal time (7:30). However, there's a slight change this semester, as we are showing two series.

And we're showing:

Night Wizard (Friday night episodes 1-9, Saturday 10-13)

Night Wizard. A term given to those whose mission is to protect the world from impending darkness. Renji Hiiragi is one such Night Wizard, who is constantly called on missions, even though all he wants is to be able to go to school and graduate. However, his latest order was to protect Elis Shiho, who is a new transfer student at his academy. Being dragged into the Astronomy Club by Renji's childhood friend, Kureha Akabane on her first day at school, Elis soon realises that she too, has the power to become a night wizard, after possessing one of seven secret Jewels, the Jewel of Kindness. Along with Renji and Kureha, Elis now begins her fight and her new life, as a Night Wizard.

Lemon Angel Project (Saturday night episodes 1-5, Sunday 6-13)

Lemon Angel was once the greatest girl band of Japan, but then it broke up and most of its members vanished. When a music producer decides to put together a new Lemon Angel, average high schooler Tomo Minaguchi is approached to audition for the group. Little does she know of the mystery behind the original Lemon Angel...

As always, we're looking forward to seeing everyone there!

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Anime RPG

Because I forgot to mention it in the previous post, this gets its own.

The Society has booked off a table at Veni Vedi Vici '09, and we're running Ron's Anime RPG at it. So, February 6 at 7:30 in A-1046, as per usual.

We'll start off with some comic unrequited love, and then move on to something that works out for our heroine. To that end, we're showing:

Itazura na Kiss

In the romantic comedy story, a high school girl named Kotoko finally tells a fellow senior named Naoki that she has loved him from afar since she saw him on their first day of high school. For those who don't know, I'm the new Anime Society Secretary and I'll be doing the emails from now on.

We're back in our normal room this semester (A-1046). Our first showing is next Friday, Jan 16. As per our usual, it will be a Movie Night and Meet and Greet. The showing will begin at 7:30 and we'll announce our plans for the semester afterwards.

We'll be showing Bleach 2: The DiamondDust Rebellion (note that this is not the movie shown in theatres last semester)

A valuable artifact known as "King's Seal" is stolen by a mysterious group of people during transport in Soul Society. Hitsugaya Toushiro, the 10th division captain of Gotei 13, who is assigned to transport the seal fights the leader of the group and shortly after goes missing. After the incident, Seireitei declares Hitsugaya a traitor and orders the capture and execution of Hitsugaya. Kurosaki Ichigo refuses to believe this, and along with Matsumoto Rangiku, Kuchiki Rukia and Abarai Renji swear to uncover the real mastermind of the stolen seal, find Hitsugaya and clear his name. Meanwhile, a rogue Hitsugaya searches for the perpetrators and uncovers a dark secret regarding a long dead shinigami.

Also, this semester we've decided to try something new and we're having several Theme Nights, rather than just our normal showings. These are as follows:

Jan 23-American Anime Night

Feb 6-Valentine's Day/Cheesy Romance Night

March 6 - Live Action Anime Night (stop adjusting your monitor, you read it right the first time)

This is new this semester and we're hoping everyone enjoys it! Feel free to give us some feedback (especially positive. We love having our egos stroked).

Hope to see everyone next Friday!

~ Rowena, Anime Society Secretary

All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Oops. <.<

Sorry for the excessively late notice. Papers and whatnot have been overwhelming this week.

Tonight is our last showing of the semester, 7:30, A-1043.

We're having Trivia, open to members (only $5). Maybe non-members as well, to get a good bunch of people. We'll see....

To accommodate Trivia, we're doing a half-showing.

We're screening Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, a Miyazaki film.

In the post-apocalyptic future, large parts of the world have been swallowed up by forests of poisonous fungi. The remaining humans live near the fungus and its monstrous insectoid inhabitants, trying to prevent its spread. One of the human kingdoms, the peaceful Valley of Wind, loves its gentle Princess Nausicaä and her father the king, but their peace is about to be broken, as they are swallowed up in the machinations of their larger, warmongering neighbours. However, Nausicaä has hidden potential, and may yet change the fate of the world.

Hopefully we'll see you tonight!
All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Member's Choice Night is Friday!

Hey everyone!

There's anime again this week, Friday the 14th, in A-1043 at 7:30.

As it's Member's Choice Night, the exec. didn't select this week's anime. We're rating this showing 14+. And now...we're Screening...

The Wallflower (Rowena's Choice)

Kyouhei, Ranmaru, Takenaga, and Yukinojou are beautiful, handsome, young men living in a huge mansion. One day, their landlord, whom they call "Auntie", asks them a favor: to make her niece, Sunako, who's going to be living with them, into a respectable young lady. She agrees to make their living expenses free of charge if they succeed, but if they fail, she'll triple their rent. Due to their confidence in knowing how to deal with women, they agree, but once they meet Sunako, they begin to realize that their lovely living arrangements may soon be in jeopardy.

and Jing: King of Bandits (Duane's Choice)

Jing may appear to be a young boy, but his remarkable skills make him one of the most feared thieves on the planet. Along with his feathered partner Kir, Jing travels from town to town, stealing anything of value regardless of the amount of security. But when he's in a pinch, he has one more trick up his sleeve: Kir bonds with Jing's right arm to perform the effectively deadly "Kir Royale" attack. And because of all this, Jing is infamously known by many as the "King of Bandits."

Hopefully we'll see you all on Friday! A Reminder to our member's who got their choices, please don't forget to bring your anime with you!
All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

And we have a showing!

So, we've figured everything out!

We're showing Kaibutsu Oujo and Boogiepop Phantom!

Kaibustu Oujo, or Monster Princess

Since Hiro Hiyorimi's parents died, he and his sister Sawawa have lived apart. Now, Sawawa has gotten a new job as the caretaker of a creepy old mansion, and has sent Hiro a letter asking him to come and stay there with her. Finding the mansion boarded up and apparently empty, Hiro wanders around town looking for Sawawa. Instead, he runs into the new resident of the mansion, and ends up pushing her out of the way of some falling steel beams. Unfortunately, he loses his own life in the process. Luckily, or perhaps unluckily, the person he thought he saved turns out to be a princess of the monster kingdom, and she grants him a second life...but only for as long as he will be her servant.

Boogiepop Phantom

A light in the sky, followed by a strange aura and grisly murders. Each character tells there own connection to the event and to a similar murder spree 5 years ago. All of the different stories are slowly tied together by seemingly minute similarities and the story of Boogiepop is unraveled.

Hopefully we'll see you guys on Friday!
All the latest updates to do with the St. John's Anime Film Society!

Halloween Showing!

Hey everyone, sorry for the delay in getting this out to you.
