Millions of people have enjoyed Wii Sports for it’s simplistic, yet fun game-play. It’s something everyone can play and enjoy. That said, the purpose of this tournament is to bring together Wii Sports fans from the St. John’s area together for a showdown. We want to see just how good you are at Wii Sports… we want to see home runs, strikes, knock outs, chip-in eagles, and… whatever the heck you call something cool in tennis. Regardless, we want to have fun.  And if you don’t want to play, that’s cool too; feel free to stop by for however long you like and watch. This event is being run by the St. John's Anime Film Society; organized by Matthew Follett (Treasurer) and Brian Summers (a former Vice President).

So, with all that out of the way, I’ll list the details and rules of the tournament.

When and where will the tournament be?
It’ll be taking place on MUN’s campus, in the Arts & Administration Building, in room A-1046. This is a mid-sized multimedia-capable room. The Wii will be hooked up to the room’s digital projector.
The event will start at 1:00pm on Saturday, October 20th. Please try to be there no later than 1:30pm as registration will end at 2:00pm.

What’s the cost of entering the tournament?
Participating in the tournament will only cost $5. The event is in support of the St. John’s Anime Film Society, a club that’s operated at MUN for over a decade. Of the money collected, 50% of the pot will go to the Anime Society to help fund the aquisition of new DVDs, any equipment that may be needed, and to help fund more events like this!

What are the prizes?
Of course, what's a tournament without prizes? The top winner of the entire tournament will take home 50% of the pot. If all 40 spots in the tournament are filled, that’s a cool $100. We’re also trying to acquire other Wii-related prizes, such as 2000 Wii Points card(s). We’ll update this as soon as we have more prizes solidified, so check back here soon!

How can I register? How many people can enter?
Main registration will take place starting at 1:00pm and ending at 2:00pm on the day of the event. The cap on the event is 40 people. Due to the size of the room and the time needed, we cannot accept any more than 40 participants. If there are less than 40 participants, the cap will be set at the closest even number (38, 36, 34, etc), so as not to have an odd number of participants.

Can I pre-register?
Yes. This will give us a good idea of how many people will be coming. If you are sure you will be coming, you may e-mail Brian (aka Zippo) at brian@extracaffeine.com (with the subject “WiiSports”). Please give me your full name. A max of 20 people will be able to pre-register and guarantee their spot in the tournament. All others will have to come and register on the day of the tournament. Pre-registered members are asked to come and pay the $5 entrance fee before 1:30pm. If not, your spot will be open to anyone else whom wishes to register. No money will be accepted before the day of the event. Registration is first-come-first-serve.

What sports will be played? How does this thing work?
All five sports within Wii Sports will be played - in five consecutive mini-tournaments. Each competitor must play each sports in tournament style. Competitors will be initially matched up in the order they register. Points will be awarded based on performance. The top four players based on points will then compete in a final series of showdowns (a random sport) for the top prize. So, even if you didn't get the top number of points, there's still a chance to win.

How will points be awarded?
Points are awarded based on performance for each successful round. The 1st place winner of each round will move on to compete further and collect more points.

Baseball (2 players per round)
            3 points for winner
            1 point for loser
Bowling (4 players per round)
            4 points for 1st place
            3 points for 2nd place
            2 points for 3rd place
            1 point to 4th place
Boxing (2 players per round)
            3 points for winner
            1 point to loser
Golf (4 players)
            4 points for 1st place
            3 points for 2nd place
            2 points for 3rd place
            1 point to 4th place
Tennis (2 players, best of 3)
            3 points to winner
            1 point to loser

In the event of a tie score, there will be a quick tie-breaking match.

What’s the schedule for the event?
Registration will be from 1:00-2:00pm
How long the rest of the tournament will take is unpredictable. The length of each mini-tournament will depend on several factors, mainly the number of competitors. Therefore, what time the tournament will end is unknown. We will have the room booked until 10pm, but it’s highly unlikely it will take that long. Our best guess is around 6-8 hours. We advise each competitor to bring a snack or take advantage of the food and drink vending machines in the Arts building. We’ll also try and bring a few snacks as well to share.
Baseball mini-tournament (starting at 2:00pm)
Bowling mini-tournament
Boxing mini-tournament
Golf mini-tournament
Tennis mini-tournament

Some time around 5-6pm, we will be taking a one-hour break for supper. Take this time to grab a meal, relax, and re-energize. If people are interested, competitors are encouraged to pitch in some money and order some pizza(s) for delivery.

Are there age restrictions?
The event is open to all ages, however we require that any person under the age of twelve be in the company of a parent, guardian, or older sibling. We also advise that, due to the fact the tournament is taking place in a university environment, the atmosphere may be unsuitable for younger children.

Rules of conduct

  • All competitors must compete in all five mini-tournaments. The mini-tournaments will work in a traditional ladder structure, with the winner of each round moving on to compete further. The more rounds you win, the more points you gain. Failing to compete in a scheduled round will be disqualified from that particular mini-tournament and will not receive any points for that round.
  • Cheating is not allowed. Any obvious attempts to cheat will result in disqualification from the entire tournament.
  • Roughhousing will not be tolerated. Try not to swing your Wii Remote violently or excessively. Accidents happen, but any intentional attempt to hit your opponent will result in disqualification. We require all players to wear their Remotes’ safety straps. We will not be liable or responsible for any injury/damage to or caused by a Wii Remote.
  • Any player who is disqualified/removed from the tournament, for any reason, will not be refunded their entry fee.
  • We ask all competitors have good sportsmanship. We understand that a win can be exciting and a loss can be frustrating, but we ask that players do not jeer losers and for winners not to gloat. This is supposed be a fun, lighthearted tournament.
  • Players are encouraged to bring their own Wii Remotes and Nunchucks to the tournament and store their own personal Mii(s) onto it. If you do bring your own Remote, we highly suggest you make it unique in some fashion to prevent mixing it up with another player’s Remote. For example: a colored ribbon tied on, a custom strap, a sticker, a rubber cover, or your name written on the inside of the battery cover.
  • In the event that a Wii Remote malfunctions and creates an obvious loss, the round will be nullified and started anew. Please make sure to have well-charged batteries before coming to the tournament. We will not be responsible for replacing dead batteries.
  • We ask that no one bring or use a Mii with a vulgar, poronographic, or generally distasteful name.
  • We ask that players skip replays (notably in Bowling and Tennis) and intro videos (such as in Golf) to save time - this is done by pressing ‘A’ on the Wii Remote.
  • For the sake of fairness, no organizers of the tournament will be competing.
  • And last, but not least, have fun!
